When I first became interested in the idea of writing and speaking about the problem of character in our society I began to search out who the leaders speaking on this subject were, and where they were gaining a following.
The first guy that I found was Stephen Mansfield. I started watching some of his talks and found my head nodding repeatedly as he talked about the need for men to reclaim their true masculine self and handle their business. He speaks with an unapologetic authority without the offensive tone that so many on the stage can carry.
Once I became aware of him, I began to check out everything he is doing. I found books, TED talks, and a weekly podcast that focuses on a variety of issues including politics, societal issues, and much more. The book “Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men” is an absolute must read for all men, along with the follow up “Building Your Band of Brothers”. The latter digs into the issue of the isolated man of today and implores us to build a brotherhood of men.
While Mansfield is an unapologetic Christian, he speaks to men of all faiths, rallying us to live the proper manly life.
His four manly maxims give us an outline of how we can immediately assess our lives and how we are all handling our business.
These maxims are:
Manly men do manly things.
Manly men tend their field.
Manly men build manly men.
Manly men live to the glory of God.
I encourage everyone to read “Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men” to get a further explanation on how each of these maxims may be implemented in our lives.
Mansfield recently announced a new endeavor, “The GreatMan”, on his podcast. This will include more training for men, more GreatMan focused content, and a brand new podcast dedicated to men and men’s issues.
I don’t know where this initiative will go, but I’m excited and if you care about the future of manhood you should be excited also! I know this will be a first class operation and lots of great content coming our way.
In addition to getting involved with projects like GreatMan, I encourage all of you to start your own journey of changing the next generation of men, starting today!

Although I have had difficulty signing up on your podcast, your blog is very much aligned with my work at characterbuildingproject.com
I look forward to listening to “The Great Man” and reading Mansfield Book of Manly Men. I have had a similar journey, writing and speaking about character. The reaction to my first book (outside the beltway) was how did you ever find ten honey politicians, while the reaction to my second Courage in America, (the stories of seven wounded warriors) was how can we help. My last book (Restoring Character in America) has a lofty goal.
